lesbian or gay, and Irish

by Paula Miller

Cleveland-The Cleveland Irish Les-BiGay Organization, or CILBGO, was founded in June of 1995 to offer Irish cultural and social activities in an environment welcoming and affirming to lesbians, bisexuals, and gays.

While the group is primarily a social and cultural organization, as part of its mission it seeks to celebrate joint pride

in Irish and gay identity, reminding people that there are lesbians, gays and bisexuals

who was hung not because he was accused of gun-running but because he was gay.

This year, CILBGO will be having a St. Patrick's Day party on Tuesday, March 17 at 7 pm at the Barbary Lane bar in Cleveland Heights. Traditional Irish food, music and dance will be provided as well as a raffle of a basket of gourmet coffee and Irish whiskey. Other upcoming events include attending Brian Friel's play Molly Sweeney on Sunday, March 8. at 7:30 pm at the Dobama The-

Cleveland

within all demographic Irish Les-Bi-Gay

groups, including people of Irish descent.

Through a celebration of Irish culture, CILBGO seeks

Organization

to build bridges with the larger Irish community and other regional, national and international lesbigay organizations.

Members of CILBGO have marched and performed at every Pride since 1995. They have also sponsored well-attended Halloween and St. Patrick's Day parties. Other activities include same gender Irish set dancing, traditional Irish music instruction, information on gay friendly travel in Ireland and serving as a contact for Irish gay immigrants and visitors to Cleveland.

They have also held commemorations of Roger Casement, an Irish gay patriot involved in the founding of the Irish Republic,

ater.

On Wednesday, April 8, there will be a commemoration of the 1916 Easter Uprising in Ireland at 7:30 pm at Guilford House on Bellflower Road in the Case Western Reserve University campus. The program, co-sponsored with the CWRU Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Alliance will include the video, Curious Journey: The Fight for Irish Freedom-currently banned by the British government-followed by a discussion on the similarities between the gay liberation movement and the Irish independence movement.

If you would like more information about these and other events or about CILBGO, please call 216-531-5188. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
